During the war, writing and receiving letters was second only to food, and the main way service men and women stayed in touch with family and sweethearts. Emotions that were previously expressed only on special occasions were suddenly written regularly to show commitment and support. USO lounges would provide materials such as the ones you see here so that letters could be easily written and mailed home.
Because mail played such a significant role in boosting morale, the Office of War Information and the Advertising Council worked together with commercial business to spread the word about the new V-Mail service, a safe and speedy way to send letters during the war.
